Unsung Heroes: Why Caregivers Must Prioritize Self-Care

October Pulse Check

October is a crucial month for health action, but behind every patient is a dedicated caregiver, the unsung hero carrying immense physical and emotional weight. If you are scheduling, listening, driving, and supporting a loved one, it is easy to put your own needs last.

However, your well-being is not a luxury; it is the necessity that allows you to provide sustainable care. As they say: You must secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others.

Here are three ways to protect your health and recharge your reserves:

  1. Be Specific When Accepting Help When friends or family offer support, don’t just say, “I’ll let you know.” Take them up on it with concrete tasks! Ask someone to pick up groceries, watch a movie with your loved one for an hour, or drop off dinner. Specific requests make it easier for people to help and give you a genuine break.
  2. Schedule Intentional Breaks You don’t need a vacation to recharge. Schedule small, guilt-free pockets of time for yourself daily or weekly. This could be 20 minutes to sit quietly, read, or listen to a podcast. Consistency in small breaks prevents total burnout.
  3. Acknowledge Your Feelings It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, sad, or even angry—these feelings do not make you a bad caregiver. Find your own support system, whether it’s a trusted friend, a therapist, or a dedicated support group, to safely share your own fears and frustrations.

Caring for yourself is the most compassionate and sustainable thing you can do for both yourself and the person you are supporting. Don’t go it alone!
